At The Game Awards 2024, a man with a large drum and a large orchestra ascended the stage to unveil the new game from Hideki Kamiya’s studio, which was a stunning surprise that nobody saw coming. To our delight, it’s a genuine sequel to Okami, so it’s not a brand-new IP. Okami 2. During the show, we didn’t get a lot of a preview of Okami 2. The reveal included a teaser of what appeared to be Amaterasu rushing over a field toward the horizon, along with some stunning music from the previously mentioned orchestra and drummer. Hopefully, there will be more soon!
For some time now, Capcom has been subtly laying the foundation for a new Okami. In addition to Dead Rising, Mega Man, Breath of Fire, Dino Crisis, and other sequels, it asked fans earlier this year if they would be interested in an Okami sequel. Additionally, Kamiya has recently told us that he has been requesting permission from Capcom to create both Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3. He also stated that he feels the original Okami team was “weak” and “not a dream team,” which suggests that he may have put together something he is a little happier with this time.
We enjoyed the original Okami even if Kamiya thought the initial squad wasn’t as good as it may have been. Back in the day, we rated the Wii version a 9/10, describing it as “one of the most ambitious and thoroughly enjoyable Wii titles to date.”
